Groundshog was founded in 1998 by Joseph Coates and has served the Greater Baltimore area since.
What started with one guy, one truck and one mower has grown into five crews, a fleet of trucks, and an unhealthy obsession with heavy equipment.
Groundshog Landscaping, Inc. is a landscape construction and commercial maintenance company, who got it’s start in maintenance and over the years gained portfolios such as The Y of Central Maryland, US Army Reserve centers, Fort McHenry and The Baltimore Convention Center, to name a few.
In the early 2000’s, Groundshog found its niche in hardscaping for both commercial and residential clients. With the help of our in-house landscape architect and civil engineers, we’ve mastered more complex installations, such as prayer gardens, cemeteries and stormwater and bioretention facilities. In 2021, we launched our pool division, successfully completing nine installations in nine months. Because our need for stone, sand and other aggregates skyrocketed, we acquired a tri-axle in 2022 and now we’re a local go-to for bulk material delivery.
Our growth is not only due to our brilliant foreman, but also our strong and supportive community. Groundshog plays an active role in Catonsville and Arbutus. Meet Our Owner
Joe Coates started his landscaping career at age 11 with his bike and a lawn mower. After earning a degree in Business Administration from Loyola, he upgraded his operation to a truck and a lawn mower when he founded Groundshog Lawn & Landscape. Since then, Groundshog Landscaping has become the full-service company you know and love today, complete with a high-performing team of landscape contractors, designers, architects, craftsmen and technicians, dedicated to creating beautiful outdoor spaces for your home or commercial property.

Carlos Perez has been with Groundshog Landscaping for nine years and counting, and he brings a wealth of experience and passion for excellence to every project. He says, "While I enjoy laying pavers, my favorite is working with natural stone. I like the challenge of piecing it together while still creating something that looks good—like art." Belen Vega has worked in landscaping for 20 years and is skilled in many aspects of the industry. “I started out by cutting grass as a kid. And, while I’ve learned more challenging skills like hardscaping, plain old yard work is my first love. It’s therapeutic to me.”
